Referee: Pete Hestler

Philadelphia-Whitemarsh’s second side and Old Boys enjoyed the comforts of home Saturday, posting two victories over Wilmington at Memorial Hall while the Super League side toiled in Atlanta.

The second side started and finished strong, but several defensive lapses kept Wilmington knocking on the door.

In the sixth minute, flyhalf Adrian Stoch nailed a penalty goal to put P-W up 3-0. Just a minute later, Kiwi outside center Phillip Tahana burst through Wilmington’s backline and zig-zagged down the pitch for a 45 meter run before getting caught five meters out. Winger Mike Badger was in his hip pocket to take a Tahana pass in for an easy try. Stoch’s convertion put P-W up 10-0.

Wilmington struck back five minutes later, pushing the ball deep into P-W territory and eventually pounding in a try with its big number 8, despite a impressive defensive stand by P-W on its own try line. The score stood 10-5 following the missed convertion attempt.

It would get worse for P-W before it got better.

Slow to get back on defense following a penalty in the 28th minute, P-W watched Wilmington’s backs break off a huge run and touch down beneath the posts. With the convertion Wilmington went up 12-10.

Now with a fight on its hands, P-W responded accordingly. In the 35th minute, with Wilmington backed up in their own end, fiery scrumhalf Louis Tulio took matters into his own hands, sneaking in for a try beneath the posts from 10 meters out. Stoch’s convertion put P-W back ahead, 17-12, going into the half.

Wilmington, however, wouldn’t go down easily. Again taking advantage of P-W moving slowly into defensive position, Wilmington fed the ball to its hard-running outside center, who broke free for a long run and another try. The convertion put Wilmington up 19-17 midway through the second half.

It would be the visiting side’s last hurrah.

A penalty goal by Stoch put P-W back up, 20-19. Then, with ten minutes remaining, Stoch found an opening and went for a drop goal from 30 meters out. The ball grazed the crossbar and went over to give P-W a slim 23-19 lead.

With one minute remaining, P-W put the nail in the coffin.

Captain Jeremy Quinn took the ball off the base of a scrum and broke through a tired Wilmington defense, pushing the ball within ten meters of the try line. On the ensuing ruck, Kiwi newcomer Robert “Roly” Rush took the ball to the blind side and fed Tulio, who had moved to wing. Tulio breezed by the Wilmington defense to put down his second try of the day. Stoch’s convertion made the final tally 27-19.
