Big Win for Philly Keeps Playoffs Alive

PHILADELPHIA – The Chicago Lions and the Chicago Griffins found themselves atop their USA Rugby Super League conferences after big wins Saturday while Belmont Shore finished the weekend as the league’s only undefeated team.

Boston Rugby and Philadelphia-Whitemarsh, meanwhile, earned their first victories of the 2007 season, giving each an outside chance at the playoffs in the White Conference. Charlotte and the St. Louis Bombers came away from the weekend still looking for their first wins.

Two Red Conference teams – Santa Monica and San Francisco Golden Gate – helped their playoff chances with wins while another - the Denver Barbarians – dropped to 2-2 and saw its path to the playoffs get much more difficult.

Denver’s misfortune was the Dallas Harlequins gain. Dallas got two tries from wing Mike Ashmead and eight points from the kicking of Vaughn Crowe to top the visiting Barbarians and up their record to 3-1.

The Griffins beat fellow league newcomer the Boston Irish Wolfhounds 15-10 on the strength of two Ryan Westaway tries and a third from club captain Brendan Brown while the Lions edged Old Blue of New York on a cold night along the Hudson River.

Belmont Shore went to 4-0 and kept its lead in the Red Conference with a solid 48-0 victory over previously unbeaten Potomac Athletic Club. Belmont was led by USA National Team flyhalf Mike Hercus, who kicked four conversions, and flanker Faimafili Elisara, who ran in two tries.
