Match Summary An overcast Saturday at Michael Camera Park showed a muddy match between the Chicago Lions and Philly-Whitemarsh rugby clubs. Chicago came out strong with a try from fly half Scott Peterson off a dummy in the seventh minute. Chicago fullback Jeeremy Nash broke away from a try to put the Lions up 12-0. The Lions continued their scoring with tries from Scott Jones, Andrew Tihore and Ed Bluemel before half.
The second half Philly-Whitemarsh neutralized the Chicago offense and led with attacks from prop Justin Zaknik and fly half Mike Graham. A penalty try for tripping in the 64th minute put Chicago up 41-0. Reserve David Selimos had a last minute try to finish the scoring at 48-0. Chicago conversions and penalty kicks came from Andrew Tihore and one conversion from Robert Cocking.
The Whitemarsh Club played 20 minutes of this game a man down and without injured starters Matt Wyatt, Ben Riley, and Ian Hincken.
Chicago Teams Win Big in USA Rugby Super League Action
PHILADELPHIA – Chicago’s two representatives in the country’s premier rugby competition earned decisive wins Saturday, putting them both on course to contend for the USA Rugby Super League championship in June.
The Chicago Lions – stacked with four candidates for the USA National Team that will play this September at the Rugby World Cup in France – cruised by visiting Philadelphia-Whitemarsh in Glendale Heights. Meanwhile, the Chicago Griffins traveled to St. Louis where they beat the Bombers to go 2-0 in their first season in the Super League.
The Lions got tries from six different players in their 48-0 victory on a sloppy, wet field. The Griffins – led by player/coach Murray Roeske’s three penalty kicks and three conversions – upended St. Louis 30-22.
The Lions rested USA National Team veteran Philip Eloff and pulled National Team candidates M.C. Laubscher, John Vitale and Scott Jones at half-time. Jones scored a try before he took the bench. Other try scorers for the Lions were flyhalf Scott Peterson, fullback Jeremy Nash, outside center Andrew Tihore, the league’s leading scorer, wing Eddie Bluemel and wing David Selimos. Tihore also kicked four conversions and a penalty while reserve fullback Josh Cocking kicked one conversion.
The Griffins got two tries from inside center Ryan Westaway and one from scrumhalf Scott Puckett.
The Griffins hope to make it three-in-a-row next Saturday when they travel to Seattle to take on Old Puget Sound Beach, narrow losers Saturday to Santa Monica. The Lions are sure to be tested when they host 2006 Super League finalist Belmont Shore.
