New USA Sevens Coach Old Boy Al Caravelli
Caravelli Named New 7s Coach
December 22, 2005, Boulder, Colo. Al Caravelli has been named head coach of USA Rugby Men's National Sevens Team, the national office announced Thursday.
The Connecticut-based Caravelli has coached the Collegiate All-Stars and Pacific Coast Sevens teams, and served as assistant coach of USA Rugby's Women’s National 7s team. As a player and coach, his club background includes stints with the New York Athletic Club, Old Blue, and Los Angeles, as well as in his native Argentina, in both 7s and 15s.
Caravelli takes the post at the start of the Rugby World Cup Sevens’s quadrennial cycle.
“The plan is to improve the team's competitiveness by using Al's intimate knowledge of our players to build patterns around their strengths. He is very much in step with the senior national team's approach of providing players with an advanced degree of detailed analysis,” USA Rugby Men's National Team director Tom Billups said in making the announcement.
Caravelli’s appointment is effective immediately.
“I am very excited about the challenge “ Caravelli said. “The pools in both Wellington and Los Angeles are difficult, but we will work hard to put in gutsy performances”. The team’s first tournament, in Wellington, N.Z. will be this February. It is expected that a majority of players will be new to the international 7s scene.
The United State's 2006 international schedule includes three tournaments in Feb. and March. The USA has been invited to participate in iRB Sevens Series events in New Zealand and Hong Kong, and will host the USA Sevens at the Home Depot Center in Los Angeles Feb. 11-12.
