The Whitemarsh RFC was founded in 1967 as a result of a discussion between Fred Bullock and John Sharp, at the time one of the driving forces in Philadelphia area rugby. The exact content of that conversation is lost in time, but John Sharp's closing comment survived. John said, "Fred, if you don't like it, start your own club". And he did! Fred had developed an interest in the game through his sons involvement at St. Joseph's College. He became a referee and thus became acquainted with John Sharp. After that fateful chat, Fred formed his own club and named it after the township where he lived, Whitemarsh. The original club consisted mainly of ex-college players and refugees from Semi-Pro Football. To say their style of play was unsophisticated is putting it mildly. The men in red and blue Harlequin Jerseys looked amusing until one of them hit you! After a few years they started to win and win regularly. As the years went on, their physical style of play was augmented by actual rugby skills. The club acquired the coaching services of George Betzler who had been a player for arch-rival Philadelphia. The club won the EPRU Championship in '76, '78, '79, '81, and '84.
